The United Methodist Women is trusted with pledges and donations from individual members and local member organizations, as well as mission partners and anonymous donors who have a heart for mission. One avenue of giving is a Special Mission Recognition to honor members and non-members who have dedicated time and effort to service. Every year, UMW of The Heart recognizes individuals who have displayed years of outstanding service to our church and our community. United Methodist Women’s Mission Giving – which is unrestricted funds – supports the total program of the organization.
This year the United Methodist Women of the Heart recognized Dave and Jan Perry and Linda McDaniel!
Jan and Dave Perry met in 9th grade and went through high school and Baptist youth group then to a Baptist college together. They were married between college and grad school. They have raised 3 children (Melissa, Mark, and Stephen) and have several grandchildren. Jan has always been busy with her church wherever they lived. Besides raising her family, Jan also worked some outside the home. Dave was busy with a number of different companies before joining Seagate for 11 years here in Longmont, retiring in 2009. During some of his years of employment he did a lot of traveling to Japan and Singapore. In 2011 they joined our church and jumped right in again helping wherever they could. Jan joined the Elizabeth Circle and is now on the Board of Trustees. While she was a member of the Lafayette UMC, she was president of their UMW. They both have visited 2 of our adult Sunday school classes and Dave has taught a series to one of them. Dave has also become our Lay Leader, attends the Church Council meetings and represents us at the Mountain Sky Annual Conference. They both joined the Justice Seekers group as they have a gay grandson and want to support him as best they can. With that love for all of God’s children, they readily offered to host 2 young trans women from Ecuador who were seeking asylum in the USA. For over a year they helped Francys and Taylor learn English, took them to doctor’s appointments, helped find legal help for them, and a myriad of other loving tasks. The women have moved on to New York now but what a safe, supportive and loving family home Jan and Dave provided for them as they began to settle in the US.
Linda McDaniel is a member of Lydia Circle where Linda has served as Circle Treasurer for several years. In that role, Linda presents programs and guidance in our Mission Giving as well as managing Circle funds. Since 2011, when Linda and husband Rob joined the church, Linda was Secretary to Church Council and helps with behind the scenes Trustees actions. Linda, and the late Linda Johnston (aka The Lindas), were considered unstoppable in everything to do with the HOL kitchen! Meal planning, cooking, budgeting, stocking, you name it! Turning out delicious meals for brunches, lunches, and the Feeding Our Souls Wednesday night dinner – all to benefit the mission of both our UMW Unit and the Heart of Longmont. While our congregation was busy creating plarn sleeping mats for HOPE clients, Linda was busy most Sundays cutting the strips needed. Linda is also the behind-the-scenes angel who creates quilts given to babies who are baptized at our church.
UMW of the Heart are honored to recognize these outstanding recipients of the Special Recognition Award!
