In the twenty-eighth chapter of the book of Genesis we get part of the story of Jacob, the son of Isaac. I have always been fascinated with Jacob.  He was a schemer, and a dreamer. He stole his brother Esau’s birthright, deceived his father Isaac and had to run away from home in fear for this life.  And while he is on the run he has an incredible dream.  He takes a stone and uses it for a pillow and falls asleep. And while he is sleeping he dreams of a tall ladder that extends up into heaven. He sees angels going up and down the ladder and at the top he sees the throne of God and the Lord is sitting on it.  And incredibly God blesses him…. Blesses this lying, scheming runaway.  God tells Jacob that his descendants will be like the dust of the earth and that all nations will be blessed because of him. And then verses 15 and 16 say this: “God tells Jacob  ‘I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’ When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.'”

Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it.

Isn’t that the way it is often. We realize in hindsight that God was with us through a certain situation.  But this is also a great reminder that God is always with us. Friends we are in a time of great uncertainty. We may feel all alone. We may feel abandoned. We may be frightened. But God is with us. Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it.

Take courage and heart as you go through your time of uncertainty. God is with you.

Let us pray….

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever.

Amen.

Go in peace my friends. Remember that you are a dearly loved child of God.

Amen.
